Here is a pic of an Alaskan King Salmon
(aka chinook) that I caught last week.... on my
first day of vacation in Alaska.
I am the one with the stupid grin on
my face. The other guy is a 35 pound block
of fighting fish and that is why these rate as
my number 1 (see my top 5 list in the
archives).
I happened to be fishing for coho salmon
and had two of those in the boat when this
bruiser hit, nearly spooling me despite the 300
yds of 20 pound trilene xl I had on.
I also caught so many pink salmon on every
type of rod/reel combo I had, I can't count
'em.
I caught fair numbers of coho, good numbers
of rock fish and a dozen or so Pacific
Halibut the largest being an estimated
155 pounder (based on a
length-weight conversion table... 67 inch long
fish) using 25 pound test line.
I do not kill the big ones as they are not
as good to eat as the 20 to 40 pounders and I
already had enough of those put away. I
also caught a 60 pounder on a spinning rod/reel
with 15 pound test.
Fishing around
here has been good this year. Lots of
folks on the ocean catching coho. My son
limited quickly on a trip he made out there
earlier this month. Next month the action
will move inside and then into the rivers.
It is looking
like a great coho year, OK chinook year and I'm
not sure yet what to expect for
steelhead.
