Robinson Bro's Fishing Report Apalachicola, Florida Saltwater Flyfishing For Redfish, Trout, & More!
As many of you know, Tommy & Chris Robinson spend a
good part of the winter months fishing with clients in the
Everglades. The first half of March there started with cool nights,
and windy days that gave way to some excellent snook fishing.
John Morrow's mom even caught her first snook on a fly!
Back home in mid March to redfish & topwater trout action in
Apalachicola Bay on the oyster bars. We had no rain to muddy
the water but cooler water than normal and continually shifting
wind direction made the redfish caught on fly (3 of them were over 7 lbs)and trout of up to 3.5 to 4 lbs a little more challenging.
Capt. Ward hooked up on a trout (on fly) that weighed in at 8 lbs and measured
31".
So far, April has been the "Invasion of the Spanish Mackeral" in
St. George sound. The East end has provided days of 100 + mackeral
fought and released, mixed with Jack Crevalles in the 15-40 lb range.
Some anglers are catching Pompano off the beach and at the cut, but
our guides have not seen them in numbers elsewhere.
The redfish have been seen in schools of 200 to 300 fish, as many as 5 schools in an afternoon. The schools have been observed in what Chris calls a "Redfish Cyclone". Probably a mating ritual, but these large schools of redfish will spin around and around in a circle, creating quite a frenzy when cast to. We have noticed these schools increasing in number and frequency each year.
Fishing Forcast for April - June "99":
Warm water (up to 72 degrees now) and lack of rain is conducive to
fantastic clear water sight fishing. We look forward to topwater trout
fishing, sight fishing trout and redfish in the shallows and the schools of ladyfish, bluefish, and spanish moving in. We should also have shots at cobia, jack crevalle and spinner sharks, with the tarpon coming in sometime in June. Its a Fish Factory here this time of year!
