This past month has been HOT!
HOT! HOT! Not only record
temperature-wise, but the Tarpon
have been here in very
large numbers.
They have been cruising
through AND laying
up in the bay, great
opportunities for both Fly Fishermen
and
Plug Casters alike.
Some days this month we have
had up
to 35
shots at Tarpon on Fly, with a respectable
hook-up
ratio.
You would think that since we
have been seeing the
Big
Guys since early May that our guides are ready
to callTarpon season over -
Capt. Tommy is fishing 6:00am to
7:00pm
and the younger guides are
putting in days almost as long.
Barring unforeseen weather
(the "H" word!) we plan on
fishing
the Tarpon into September.
August dates are still available!!!
Tarpon
aren't the only fish to grace our waters these
days.
Capt. Chris has seen huge
schools of Black Drum with Kevin
Mahaffey (see photos - trip
section), and our newest addition,
local Capt. Nathan Donahoe has
been guiding for big Reds and
some
fat Tripletail. Last week his charter insisted
on keeping a
5'
blacktip shark that they caught. I hope they
have some good
recipes!
On the
casualty list, because Tarpon fishing is not as
safe as
watching
the "Spanish Fly" on TV on Saturday
mornings, only one Orvis fly rod has
"Blown UP" while fishing. Several
charters rods
have bit the dust
(name brands not mentioned) and yesterday
Chris's 12 weight
Wonderline decided to go the way of the
Tarpon.
Capt. Ward was hooked up -
Literally! - to a big fish the last day
July.
His guest ("Combat", you know who you
are) jumped a good size fish
very near the boat and it landed on the stern of
Ward's
Hewes
Redfisher. While this all happened very quickly,
Ward couldn't
figure
out why the damn thing wouldn't fall back into
the water until
he saw
that the treble hook at the end of the plug that
wasn't in the
fishes
mouth was imbedded in the top of his
foot! All in a days fishing!
Speaking
of Hewes, David Keysar of the same was here for
2 days
this month with his
friend Byron Bailey. David redeemed himself on
day 2 and now has the Tarpon Fever as
well. Was that 9 days you wanted to book next
year, David?
Anyone
planning on Fly Fishing for Tarpon with Capt.
Tommy or Capt.
Chris in 2000 might
want to get your reservations in IMMEDIATELY!!
We will
have all of the fly
fishing guides booked for next summer by the end
of this Sept.
so please
call or email soon.
We
are making 2 quick trips to the Everglades this
fall. Tommy has an
opening for Sept.
20-23 for Redfishing on the outside and unless
John
Morrow commits
sometime soon, we have room for 4 people on
October 18,19 & 20 for
Snook.
The
fishing here is so good September through
November
and on
into December for tailing Redfish,
Trout, and the fall Spanish & Pompano
push, and the weather is so nice,
that we almost hate to
leave!!
Thanks for
reading my fishing report. For more details or
updated information
please call me mornings and evenings at
