 Sierra Online
Fishin the Eastern Sierra
By Michael Sommermeyer
The Eastern Sierra of California has long been known as the premier trout fishery in California. Winter fishing this year has been real productive for Native Browns in the Owens Valley near Bishop, California. However, the real big fishing opens up next month when the lakes and streams of Mono County officially open for fishing on April 24th.
Crowley Lake has been for years a prime spot for not only rainbow and brown trout, but also for the Sacramento Perch. This fishery opens on April 24th, and if years past are any indication, the boats ought to be stacked next to each other!
This lake is located 350 miles north of Los Angeles on Hwy. 395 and just minutes from Mammoth Lakes and Bishop, California.
If you enjoy fishing for trophy-sized rainbows and German browns, or if you would rather catch buckets full of Delicious Sacramento Perch, this is the place. Nestled in a beautiful valley and surrounded by the Sierra Nevada range, Crowley Lake is eight miles long and sits at an elevation of 6,500 feet.
Up the road from Crowley is the famous Hot Creek. This fishery contains native brown and rainbow trout and is a fly-fisherman's dream! It really is a pristine place and the majestic 11,546-foot Mammoth Mountain acts as a back-drop to a sprawling
meadow of 300 acres of land located at its base. The spring creek, they call Hot Creek, ribbons its way back and forth through this vast expanse of wildflowers, and tall meadow grasses. When Zane Grey visited this place forty years ago, he summed it up best. "This is the most beautiful place in the Eastern Sierras that I have seen yet." You really have to see it to understand the majesty of this place.
Anyway, we help fishermen enjoy the Eastern High Sierra by linking them up with licensed guides, placing them in mountain cabins and providing travel arrangements. We can be reached at sierra@assentweb.com or by phone at (888) 247-2066. Guide services start at $125.00 for a half-day or $225 for a full day. Accommodations start at $65 a night and work their way up to deluxe lodging at $150 or more a night. The area is close to Los Angeles, Burbank and the Reno Airports. We even help you obtain the lowest airfare!
Contact us if you want more information, and as always, Happy Fishing!
