Small Trevalle

Micronesia Monsters

Here in the islands of the North West Pacific( not the Pacific northwest) fishing on the reefs and inside lagoons is usually done with spinning gear.

One of the greatest challenges is to catch a "Giant Trevalle", the largest member of the jack family. Growing as big as 200 pounds, this jack is the enforcer on the reef.

If you spend any amount of time fishing the reefs for other species, you will eventually lose lures and line to these brutes, and you will find yourself thinking of ways to prove that you can step up to the challenge.

This entails spooling up 300 meters of 50-80 braided line and long wind on leaders, plus a spinning rod up for that line class's pressures.

A hooked up "GT" will weave it's way around coral head after coral head- so you can forget light lines- unless you want that fish you hook up to drag around dozens of meters of line after it breaks off.

A hundred pounder can take out 300 meters of line set at 18 pounds of drag, so chasing the fish to make up line is needed, unless you can get to deep water quickly.

If you've got stories, tips, or interest in big fish on spinning gear-- let's hear it.
Keep a tight line.
